Illustrator David Levine died December 29 in Manhattan. He was 83 years old. Levine’s work appeared in The New Yorker, Time, Esquire, and other publications. For five decades his big-headed caricatures of politicians and writers were the defining images of the New York Review of Books; he contributed more than 3,800 drawings to that magazine from 1963-2007. Appreciations by Michael Kimmelman and Steven Heller, and an obituary by Bruce Weber, have appeared in the New York Times in the last week.

The obituary links to a small gallery of Levine’s work. The Bruce Weber link features a tribute slide show to Levine.
