Stationery, print and design fans, Christmas arrives Sunday May 19, 2013 with the 67th National Stationery Show®:

“The world’s most comprehensive marketplace for social stationery and related lifestyle products. No other trade fair in the U.S. matches the depth and caliber of stationery selection at the NSS—or serves as the launching pad for so many young, creative businesses each year.”

There is absolutely zero hype in this statement. It is 100% true — make that 128% — this is New York City, right? And everything’s truer in New York City. Could there be a friendlier industry gathering of 11,000 people, 8,500 store owners and 800 exhibitors?  Thousands of happy, friendly paper artists, designers and printers, all armed with engraved, pressed, foiled, stamped, numbered, hand-tipped, die-cut, hand-sewn, raffia-tied samples? What’s not to like? The NSS is really just a massive Cuddly Kitten Convention.  And a very serious business.

Legion Papers and 22 of their closest design-print friends may have the most popular booth draw gimmick of the year. It is Bingo for Two, a scavenger hunt style game that Legion Papers says is their flashiest most bedazzling ploy yet. The logistics alone are jaw dropping (see below).  Bingo for Two was developed by Amber Ellis Sequine at Flywheel Press (San Mateo) to entice NSS attendees to visit a variety of booths they might normally pass up and have fun while meeting new people.

Set 4_Final_600

•            1 rule: print back and front of a 2”x 2” frame—the rest is left to the imagination of the designer
•            22 different designers/letterpress studios
•            28 different substrates (all are fine art papers carried by Legion Paper)
•            32 BINGO picture cards for collectors
•            800 exhibitors surround by a sea of…
•            … 11,000 expected attendees
•            500 probable shout outs of the winning word,  “BINGO!”

Like those in the past, the game is a scavenger hunt. Collect all 32 chips, circle back to the Legion Paper booth (#3074) to collect your cool game board and a box to house your bingo chips. Who wouldn’t want to meet these people and snuggle with their lovely print-crafted paper products.

Says Marc Schotland of Legion Paper, “As you pick up all the bingo chips and other components of Picture Bingo at the show, you’ll notice every chip is printed on different substrates. Some you’ll recognize, but I am certain there will be quite a few papers to learn about and savor. We love paper surprises and encourage paper lovers to try a new paper whenever possible. In creating this game, we asked the designers and printers involved to try a paper that they hadn’t used before.  The results, we think, are spectacular.”
