5Ws With Anne Boston

Each month we offer the 5ws column to bring focus to suppliers, printers, specialty finishers and clients whose products, performance and community involvement deserve inspection and commendation.  This month we met up with designer, singer, letterpress Anne Boston.

Who & Where

Anne’s home is in Colbert, Georgia, but she commutes to Atlanta for her job as an in-house designer at Emory University in Atlanta, GA, and she is a loyal customer of Neenah Paper (Anne designed a CLASSIC Laid piece for Kimberly Clark back in 1984). But there is more to this designer than meets the eye.

In addition to being a designer at Emory, Anne engages in two unique activities. One, she has a letterpress in her garage on which she does some small jobs. Her work at Emory keeps her busy so right now she treats the letterpress more like a hobby, but one she is passionate about.

However, the other side of Anne’s persona is a little more avant-garde than doing letterpress; she was a singer in one of Georgia’s celebrated bands: the Swimming Pool Q’s. They were among the first generation of Georgia’s new wave bands that included THE B-52’s, THE BRAINS, PYLON and R.E.M. Founded in Atlanta in 1978, the Q’s recently commemorated their 35th anniversary with a double CD reissue of “The A&M Years: 1984 – 1986.”

The commemorative CD set was released on June 25, after a live release party on June 15, 2013 in Atlanta.

Anne enjoys her work at Emory in development and alumni relations, but as any designer knows, it’s always helpful to seek inspiration from unexpected sources.
