Check Your Mailbox!
Who does not love a printed greeting card? ’Tis the season for sharing some fine and merry inspiration, so take a break from the baking, online shopping—with next day delivery—and get a load of these cards. Well, really, all I want for Christmas is one of these holiday cards to show up in my mailbox.
1. Plaid Scarves: Never Extinct
While you may wonder what dinosaurs have to do with the holidays, we can’t get over this warm and cozy greeting created by Katydid, a letterpress studio in Brooklyn, New York. Part of the Dinosaur series, Apatosaurus, a synonym for brontosaurus, printed in red and black ink on CRANE’S LETTRA® Cover PEARL WHITE 100C.
2. Artificial Scent-sations
A collaboration between print shop Everlovin’ Press of Kingston, Canada, and illustrator Tom Froese in Vancouver, Canada, this limited-edition series of four letterpress Christmas cards was inspired by the artifice and sentimentality of vintage Christmas decoration packaging. “Simplistic and idiosyncratic illustrations aim to impart the real spirit of the holidays—ephemerality and disappointment with a tinge of that particular frustration that accompanies trying to put your string of lights back in the box the way they came,” explains Tom. Cards printed on Neenah CORONADO® SST Papers, BRIGHT WHITE 130C, vellum finish and paired with French Paper envelopes.
3. Get Your Merry On!
We took a shine to these holiday cards by Abbey Fowler of 625 Paper Studio. She decided to marry merry gold and silver on Neenah’s ENVIRONMENT® Honeycomb Raw 80C and ENVIRONMENT® Concrete Raw 80C. The designer/printer was happy with the results: “I will be promoting them more in my 2015 Holiday catalog next year.” Shine on!
4. Jolly Old Santa On a Broadsheet!
Do you hear what I hear? Sleigh bells (above)…at The Red Door Press in Des Moines, Iowa. The duo behind the letterpress print shop, husband and wife Adam and Tammy Winn, used a mixture of both wood and metal type and line ornaments that were cut by Moore Wood Type for the Sleigh Bells Are Ringing card (printed on a combination of CLASSIC CREST® Cover Solar White and paired with French Paper. That wasn’t all The Red Door Press did to make spirits bright. After they acquired a large Santa plate, they had to find a sheet broad enough to print his jolly self. “Due to the size we kept moving from press to press and ended up using our 12×18 Chandler and Price for the first time,” explains Tammy. “We covered the fresh rollers with gold ink and actually printed in a very old fashioned way as the press is still being restored and currently does not have a treadle or motor.” They were crazy enough (determined enough!) to push the fly wheel by hand just to print on on NEENAH™ Blotter Papers 100C.
5. Thanks Be to Clients!
Paperzest (paperzest.com) is a custom stationery shop in Washington, DC. They created a holiday card (above) that’s as good as gold. Says Paperzest’s founder Christina Barbour, “This past Thanksgiving we sent this card out to offer our appreciation to those who’ve helped us get to where we are today.” The cards are foil-stamped with a Satin Gold foil by Artisan2 (artisan2inc.com) in Alexandria, Virginia and mailed with vintage stamps. “They really turned out nice,” she says. Printed on a Paperzest favorite: CLASSIC CREST® Crest Natural 130C and Stardream Antique Gold 130C.
6. Goes Well With Turkey
Nothing like good cheer from Angel Bomb to take the edge off the season and soften the anxiety of family gatherings. This holiday greeting kit that included gift tag stickers, greeting cards, paper lights, hangtags and coasters. Says Angel Bomb’s Todd Thyberg, “The holidays with families can be stressful so we wanted something that took the edge off. Families are easier to handle with a stiff glass of cheer… hence the coasters. The paper lights make a great decoration that can last for years without the bulbs burning out and the tags were all useful items for when you give gifts. It was our gift to our clients, a little love, a little levity and a little bit of usefulness.” Cards were printed on CRANE’S LETTRA® PEARL WHITE 110C, letterpress 3 color PMS, diecut and scored. Angel Bomb knows how to take the edge off.
