More Posters, DDC, and Biking for Water at HOW

Written by in Events

You can definitely feel the energy at this year’s HOW Design Live in Chicago. I didn’t need to know that over 4,000 creatives are here to tell that it was packed – the fact that I’m writing this in a large room just outside of the speaker set up with video feed for overflow should have been enough of a clue. (listening to Tobias Frere-Jones talking about type anatomy is very fascinating by the way).

After Tuesday’s poster signing, Wednesday really brought the giveaways in the exhibition hall. Above is Karen Larson signing at the Neehah Paper booth.

Neenah Paper’s Jamie Saunders shows Von Glitschka his printed poster design. I counted at least four free poster signings at the booth throughout the day.

Over at the Adobe booth, Aaron Draplin represents the DDC with a poster made using their new app – Adobe Shape CC. If you have the creative cloud, the app is free – it’s a pretty fun app – try it out.

A really nice addition to the conference this year is HOW providing a large booth to promote cause related design. This time, it’s Rule 29‘s Wheels 4 Water campaign.

An interactive element of the booth allows attendees to power a record player with a bike. $40 will provide one person clean water for life, and sponsors are donating for every mile ridden during the conference. If you have an aversion to amazing 80s records, another bike powers a globe.

Even with modern technology (do bikes that power Madonna records count?), sometimes a simple board with post-it notes and business cards is the most efficient way to connect.
