Classic, Meet Future

Written by in #ClassicNeenah

We recently went on a mission, with the help of the ever-creative team at Design Army, to discover the next class of great design cities, and the innovators who are making their marks there. The result is the new Future Classic promotion — seven emerging designers, six up-and-coming cities, all compiled into one 15-page, perfect bound book. (Check out #CLASSICNEENAH on Instagram.)

Design Army scoured design blogs, college websites and their own social networks looking for independent artists at the top of their games in varying geographic areas, who could work with Neenah CLASSIC® Papers and bring an unique perspective to the project.

They selected seven emerging designers in six up-and-coming cities, then gave those designers a mission… As a way to honor the relationship between destination and design the artists were asked to visually interpret their city using CLASSIC Papers.

“It’s interesting to see the way each of the artists approached the design project, the types of artistic treatments they used, what about their cities inspired their design, and the different ways they used the papers.” — Pum Lefebure, Co-Founder & Chief Creative Officer, Design Army.

The Future Classic designers are: Emily Brown, Portland, OR; Kate Zaremba, Washington, DC; Sarah Jacoby, Philadelphia, PA; Faun Chapin & Meg Paradise, Oakland, CA; Jay Fleck, Chicago, IL; and Russell Shaw, Atlanta, GA.

Starting next week we will publish exclusive bonus content from Future Classic, featuring interviews with each designer.

In the meantime, here is a peek at some of the projects featured in the promotion.
Inspired by Portland’s green spaces, Emily Brown’s cut paper artistry is second to none.

Left: “Go big or go home” captures Sarah Jacoby’s philosophy when it comes to paper craft. She cut hundreds of pieces of CLASSIC Papers to create a Mummers mask.
Papers: CLASSIC Linen, AVALANCHE WHITE

Right: Faun Chapin and Meg Paradise have a penchant for inspired illustration, Oakland’s musical heritage, and gold foil. And yes, that record really spins.

With a knack for clever illustration, Jay Fleck puts an artful spin on the only way to eat a real Chicago-style dog, illustrated as a transit map.
Papers: CLASSIC CREST, PATRIONT BLUE Neenah-FutureClassics-11-Atlanta-SignatureShot LR

Don’t ask Russell Shaw to choose between food and art, instead he combines both in his seven-day restaurant tour Atlanta on 30,000 Calories.

Papers: CLASSIC Laid, RECYCLED 100 BRIGHT WHITE, WHITESTONE, AND SILVERSTONE; NEW CLASSIC CREST, SOLAR WHITE
